Custom and Scleral Contact Lenses

Custom & Scleral Contact Lenses

Custom Fitted Contact Lenses

At Mission Eye Care, we specialize in fitting complex eyes with custom contact lenses. We are the only clinic in Alberta with two eye doctors residency trained in the fitting of specialty contact lenses. Our doctors continue to be involved in academia and continue to teach and lecture in this field across the continent. Our reputation and expertise in this field gives us access to technology and lenses from almost every manufacturer in North America

Many patients with eye diseases such as keratoconus, or post surgical eyes (corneal transplant, refractive surgery) have poor vision with conventional lenses. Our expertise is in the fitting of scleral or hybrid lenses to give both clear vision and good comfort not possible with conventional designs. We take topographical maps of the exact irregularities and then custom design a lens that provides the ideal correction. Many patients are astonished to see how good their vision can be, and we take great pride in the work we do and the rewarding feeling of giving patients back their gift of sight!

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral contact lenses are large diameter rigid lenses that rest on the white part of the eye while providing the ideal optical correction over the cornea. They provide excellent vision and comfort for those who cannot see well with conventional lenses. They are able to be customized for many different eye conditions and irregularities, included custom 3D printed and impression molded designs.

NEW! We are proud to be the first and only clinic in Canada with 3D scleral mapping technology. This instrument allows us to take an accurate map of the entire front surface of the eye, allowing us to design the most precise scleral lens possible. Increased accuracy means better lens comfort, better vision, and healthier long term wear due to a more precise custom fit.

EyePrint Prosthetic Contact Lenses

We are proud to be the only clinic in Western Canada to fit the EyePrint Prosthetic contact lens. This lens is 3D printed from a custom mold taken of the front of the eye. We are one of the few non-university clinics in North America to offer this specialized lens.

BostonSight Scleral Lenses

We are also the first Canadian clinic to offer the affordable alternative to the BostonSight PROSE treatment, the new BostonSight SCLERAL lens. This lens is based on data gathered from over 7000 wearers and allows us to provide high levels of customization at a much lower cost.

Scleral lenses can be customized for any type of prescription. This includes multifocals that allow clear vision for distance as well as near. Many patients who have never been able to see well with glasses get perfect vision with sclerals. If you have been fit with these lenses or would like to know more about their care and handling, you can review this training video.

Hybrid Lenses

We are also one of the only clinics in Alberta that fit the entire family of SynergEyes hybrid lenses. Hybrids are suitable for keratoconus, post corneal transplant, and ectasia from failed refractive surgery. These lenses are also great for those who like the vision of rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses but want something more comfortable. These lenses are optically superior but offer similar comfort to soft lenses. The center of these lenses is rigid, allowing for ideal optical correction, while the rest of the lens is soft, allowing for all day comfort.

Soft and Gas Permeable Lenses

We also fit specialty soft and rigid gas permeable lenses such as Rose-K, piggyback and other post-surgical designs for mild to moderate cases. For early keratoconus, we now have comfortable and convenient soft lens options such as the Kerasoft Thin. If you have been fit with one of these designs, you can view the training videos on our contact lens page.
